August 30th

The highlight of this day was arriving at the Saga Hotel in Oslo. Not much of a highlight, but this turned out to be just a driving day.

On this day, we drove from Lom all the way down to Oslo. We took a slower route because we planned to stop and do one of two hikes - either we would do the 9 km Rasletinden hike, or the shorter 4 km hike up Mount Bitihorn. But we pulled up to the trailhead for both of those hikes, there were enveloping clouds all around us and rain was coming down steadily. Plus, because they are at high altitude, it was quite cold. The car thermometer reported that it was just 9 degrees Celsius. The conditions were so awful and the clouds so thick that we didn't even seriously consider doing either of these hikes. We simply drove on toward Oslo.

When we dropped down lower from the Jotunheim area, the clouds dispersed a bit and the day lightened up. The long drive into Oslo was uneventful.

Of course, we missed the turn to the Saga hotel in Oslo. It is hard to spot the small road signs painted on the building walls. It is also unnerving to drive on roads that have tracks for trolleys. I wasn't sure if those roads were meant exclusively for the electric buses, or if cars could share those roadways. Plus, there was construction and one way streets - we ended up near City Hall, well passed our hotel. Central Oslo is not that big, driving just a few blocks moves you a good distance across the city map. We asked a local person where we were, and she pointed out our location on the map. From there we plotted a correct course and arrived safely at about 3 PM.

I really liked the Saga Hotel. It was much more luxurious than the cabins and hostels we had been staying in, with modern lighting, nice beds and big bathroom.

The Saga Hotel is close to Vigland Sculpture park, so after an early pizza dinner, our plan was to tour the park during the evening. But it started to rain, so we postponed the park until tomorrow.

Today we drove 337 kilometers.
