Peru Trip 2016

June 5: Day 1: Fly to Cuzco

The first day of our Peru trip was all about flying. We flew from Seattle to Los Angeles, caught a redeye flight to Lima on LAN, spent three hours in the Lima airport and then landed in Cuzco in late afternoon. The LAN flight to Lima fed us pretty well - we got a ravoli + mushroom dinner after takeoff (even though we didn't take off until after midnight!), and then a cheese sandwich for breakfast before landing in Peru.

Hotel Rumi Punko had a driver waiting for us at the airport, holding up our name on a sign. I am really glad that every where we went in Peru, we had someone else driving. The drivers in Cuzco and Lima a aggressive and the roads are narrow. No signs anywhere, lots of one way streets. It would be a nightmare to try and navigate through the cities of Peru on our own.

We didn't feel like having a big dinner after arriving in Cuzco, our top priority was getting some sleep. However, we did want to meet with Alpaca Expeditions, because they would be our guides on the Sacred Valley Tour and on the Inca Trail hike to Machu Picchu.

We walked from the hotel over to the Alpaca Expeditions office, and checked in with them. Everything was in order. On our way back to the hotel, we paused in the Plaza de Armas. This is the main square in the center of Cuzco. The famous cathedral is on the east side of the square, and a rival church built by the Jesuit order, the La Compañía de Jesús. There is a fountain in the center of the square. We walked through this square multiple times during our Cuzco visit, and there always seemed to be performers and people in costume. Plenty of people selling stuff too.

Day 1 was uneventful, and that was a good start to a trip that went perfectly.
