July 23: Tolmin Gorge

Today involved a bunch of logistics. First we caught the bus from Bohinj back to the capital, Ljubjlana. We walked over to the luggage storage, grabbed our bags, and then walked back to the central bus station and rode a bus from Ljubjlana to the airport. We had a Peugot van waiting there at the Alamo rental agency, we intended to drive the five of us and all our luggage around for the remainder of the trip. However, during all of these bus rides, Paul and Leslie received word of a crisis back in the states. They made a quick decision to cut short the rest of their Slovenia vacation and immediately fly back to Houston. That left only Anthony, Melanie and I in Slovenia. I asked the Alamo representative if we could downsize from the Peugot van, and we ended up with a station wagon instead.

I drove that station wagon to Tolmin. Google maps directed us through some winding backroads - it may have been the "optimal" route according to Google algorithms, but driving on narrow one lane mountain roads as they twisted up and down was a challenge. I was glad I was not driving a bigger van! Fortunately, we met very little oncoming traffic - apparently none of the Slovenians drive those crazy back roads.

Our rental house was not in Tolmin, but in a smaller village called Gabrje on the outskirts. We stayed in the downstairs of a home that was managed by a nice Slovenian woman. She seemed pleased that her home had attracted American tourists. She was also quite proud of Slovenian heroes Luka Dončić and Tadej Pogacar - who won his fourth Tour de France title later that summer.

We had pre-purchased entry tickets to Tolmin Gorge at 3 PM. This is a popular attraction and I thought it might be sold out. But we walked right up to the entry booth and started our tour.

Tolmin Gorge has dramatic, narrow canyons carved by water. The water is a stunning aquamarine color, it almost looks unreal. There is a one way path that takes you to various viewpoints; I think the total distance is less than 2 KM. However, there are a number of steps that must be climbed to reach the Devil's Bridge and the exit. It was a warm day, so climbing the stairway warmed me up. This caused me to stop many times to take pictures.

Tolmin Gorge was the only attraction we had time to visit today. Here is a map of the Tolmin Gorge from a sign board (I added the dark red text in English).
