July 21: Mostnica Gorge, Voje Waterfall

Today we did a 15 Km hike starting from our rental house. Our goal was the Mostnica Gorge and the Voje waterfall. (On some websites, the waterfall is called the Voje Waterfall, but other sites identify it as the Mostnica Waterfall. The Mostnica river flows through the Voje Valley, so either name seems accurate.)

The forecast called for rain in the afternoon, so we started early, walking from Ribčev Laz to the Mostnica Gorge. We must have gotten there early, because the entrance ticket booth was unmanned and we just strolled in. The river is crossed by four bridges plus a footbridge, so it was named Mostnica - "most" is Slovenian for "bridge". Some websites call the river Mostnice instead of Mostnica, so I like to call it the "Most Nice River".

There was a trail map posted at the entrance to Mostnica Gorge. We walked all the way up to the waterfall. On our way north, we took the right side of the gorge, and our return we walked along the left side. On our way back, it started to sprinkle. I stopped and put on my rain pants, jacket and pack cover. That seemed to appease the rain gods, because the rain did not hit us on the rest of the walk home.

In the late afternoon, a tremendous rainstorm struck, accompanied by thunder and lightning. I have not seen such a downpour of water since our trip to the South Island of New Zealand. Water fell out of the sky like a waterfall; it seemed incredible that the atmosphere could hold so much rain. Fortunately, we were all back at the rental house when it hit, except for Paul, who had gone out for a walk. We learned later that he was fortunately near a store front when the storm cut loose. He just waited out the rainfall, which didn't last that long, and walked on back.

As the torrents of rain poured down, I wondered about the volume of water in the waterfall and the gorge. What would they look like now, with so much water rushing through? But I wasn't motivated enough to walk all the way back out there that evening to see, especially if more storms were coming in.
