July 15: Ljubljana

We had a full day to explore Ljubljana, the capital city of Slovenia. Everything was within easy walking distance of our lodging, which was near the main train/bus station. The Ljubljanica River runs through the center of the city. There are pedestrian only streets, squares and markets along the river front, so it was nice to walk along and investigate the sites. The biggest draw seemed to be the bridges that crossed the river. I was particularly fond of the Dragon Bridge.

We rode a funicular up to the castle. This old fortification looked to have been been updated several times, not too many of the original buildings are left. After we wandered around the courtyard, we exited out the main gate and did some more exploring on the grounds. We walked all the way around the outside of the castle, looking up at the walls. Then we walked over to vineyards and hilltop ruins before walking down the hill and back into the Ljubljana metropolis.

We walked through more of Ljubljana's pedestrian streets until we finished at the St. Nicholas Cathedral. There was a €3 admission charge. St. Nicholas had a lot ornate paintings and carvings in the interior. After we walked through there we headed back to the rental apartment.

It turned out to be a good plan that we stayed an extra day in the capital after arriving. It allowed Lufthansa to deliver Anthony's lost luggage bag this night, so he was able to get his hiking poles before we began our trek in the Julian Alps.
