July 22: Mt. Vogel Cable Car

Today was an easy day. We walked 5 Km along the south shore of Lake Bohinj to the base of the Mt. Vogel cable car and took the ride up the mountainside. Once we disembarked from the gondola, we then rode a chair lift even higher up the mountain. This gave us views of the surrounding mountains in Triglav National park. Unfortunately, clouds came and went, so we never did spot Mt. Triglav today. But we did get some nice glimpses of the other peaks.

From the top of the chair-lift, hikers can follow trails that lead to the summit of Mt. Sija or Mt. Vogel, but given that the viewing conditions were often obscured by clouds, we didn't feel motivated to do a lot of uphill hiking. Melanie and I did wander around on the top of the mountain, looking down on Ribčev Laz from what looked like a paraglider launch point (though we did not actually see any paragliders take off from there).

Some signs pointed out an archeaological site. I was surprised to learn that so far back in history that people had been up at these altitudes mining iron ore. How did they know to climb all the way up here and dig in this particular location to find the ore? The ice age was over, but it was still mighty cold up in the mountains. I took some photographs of the information signs, which I have posted here.

We took the cable car back down the mountain and walked the 5 Km back to our rental house at Ribčev Laz.
