After touring Tulum for a few hours, we ate a quick lunch, and drove south. It is long way from Tulum to Kohunlich - almost 300 km. We pulled into the Kohunlich parking lot at 4:15 PM. They closed at 5 PM. The guy running the ticket booth told us sternly that they closed at 5 PM (I can understand his feelings - he doesn't want to stay late for some tourists) - so we only had forty five minutes to see Kohunlich. But I really wanted to see the Temple of the Masks, so we paid and went in.

Kohunlich is a bigger site than I expected. It is larger than Tulum, with larger buildings. The highlight of course is the famous Temple of the Masks, but there are also several large structures. The grounds are nicely groomed and the buildings restored - it would take about an hour and half to see the whole place thoroughly. We didn't have time to walk over to the Temple of 27 steps.

Kohunlich was first settled around 200 BC, but the primary building phase was from 100 to 900 A.D. By 1300 A.D., the city was abandoned.

We left at 5 PM and drove west to Rio Bec Dreams, where we stayed for the next three nights. The sun set at 5:50 PM, so we drove the last few miles in the twilight.
