Geneva

August 1

Our plane landed in Geneva right on time, but it took a long time for our bags to be unloaded from the plane. Also, the wait for the shuttle to take us to the Holiday Inn seemed interminable, so we didn't reach the hotel until 3 P.M. We were scheduled to meet Stephen and James in downtown Geneva at 4 P.M. in front of the cathedral, so had to hurry. Fortunately, the Holiday Inn gave us a free tram ticket, so we were able to hop on the train and ride it straight downtown. We reached the square in front of the cathedral - and there was James! But where was Stephen?

Stephen's plane had been delayed due to mechanical troubles leaving Columbus, so he missed the flight from Washington D.C to Geneva. At that moment, Stephen was currently in Washington D.C., hoping to catch the plane to Geneva the next morning.

James had already walked around much of the old town of Geneva, but he explored it again with Melanie and me. We saw the Jet d'Eau and the famous flower clock. We walked through the cathedral, including the ornately decorated chapel of the Maccabees. My favorite sight in Geneva was in the Maison Tavel museum. The Maison Tavel contains artifacts from the long history of the Geneva, which goes all the way back to the time of the Romans. On the top floor of the Maison Tavel, someone had built an enormous scale model that depicted Geneva as it looked in 1815. Geneva had walls and battlements. The Rhone river had been diverted to fill big moats. I thought it was an impressive model.

We walked around a little bit through the old city streets of Geneva. We crossed the bridge over the Rhone river, and briefly visited the Isle Rousseau. When I was a child, I thought it was neat that the European continent was bisected by two rivers, one called the Rhine (flowing north) and the other the Rhone. If only they could have been joined together into one mighty river called the Rhino.

Since we gotten hardly any sleep on the redeye flight, we were tired and took the tram back to the Holiday Inn. We looked for a restaurant to eat dinner, but in the end we were just too tired and returned to our rooms, ate some granola bars, and turned in early. It had been raining earlier that morning when James landed, but the weather was clear in the afternoon. How would the weather tomorrow turn out? Would Stephen make it to Geneva?
