Offersøykammen

This was our last full day in the Lofoten Islands. Anneka and Leslie decided to skip our final mountain hike and instead go on a guided kayak trip from Nusfjorden out to the Norwegian Sea.

Like Reinebringen, the hike up Offersøykammen is quite popular because it is a relatively easy hike, yet still yields fantastic views, especially on a clear sky day like the one that we enjoyed. Like Veggen, the trail simply heads straight uphill, but - unlike Veggen - this trail is not that steep and most people will walk right up it without much trouble. The hike is certainly worth the effort. Offersøykammen has a large summit, so hikers can walk around taking pictures in all directions. From the top, we could easily see Veggen, the hike from our previous day.

According to web translating tools, Offersøykammen is Norwegian for "Sacrifice Ridge". That sounds a bit ominous, hopefully there is no dark history connected to Offersøykammen.

The E10 goes through an underwater tunnel to get between these two Lofoten Islands. We saw a pair of cyclists in this tunnel. It seemed like a risky ride to me, but there is no other route to travel between the islands. I don't think the Lofoten Islands would be a good destination for road biking - the few roads that snake along the mountainsides at the water's edge are generally narrow and with little shoulder. Traffic is increasing as the Lofoten's become more popular.

We had a victory dinner that night in the Nusfjord restaurant to celebrate our successful adventure. The Lofoten's are well worth seeing and I am glad we were able to make this trip.
