The primary reason to visit Slovakia was to tour the countryside from where Melanie's ancestors came. She wanted to see the small towns around Košice where her grandparents had been born. We wanted to collect church records and see cemeteries. Best of all, we got to visit with Melanie's cousins. Not everyone spoke English, and we don't speak Slovak, but everyone was friendly and welcoming and we enjoyed wonderful visits. Martin was incredibly helpful showing us around and coming with us to the archives. Without Martin's help, I doubt we would have been able to explain to the managers at the archives what materials we wanted to look out.

We amassed a huge collection of photographs on these geneaology days - pictures of old records and pictures in graveyards. Melanie even made a few discoveries while there and wants to return to do more research.

Here is a map of the towns that we drove to on our tour, looking at cemeteries and churches and just seeing how everything looked.
