Hiking Nova Scotia : Aug 29

The original plan for today was to drive to the Three Sisters and do a hike. But we discovered that reaching the trailhead would have required us to drive for fifteen kilometers on gravel/dirt roads, so we opted out of that plan.

Our first stop today was the light house at Cape D'Or. This is not a hike, but a viewpoint out into the Bay of Fundy. The lighthouse is built here because geologic features cause the currents to swirl treacherously together here, creating the "Dory Rips".

Further down the road, we stopped at Five Islands Lighthouse Park. The walk down to the beach turned out to be fascinating. The time was midway between high tide and low tide, which meant that the rate of change in the water level was at its maximum rate. In the minutes we stood on the beach, we could watch as more rocks and sand surfaced while the water receded. It was dramatic to see the water levels changing at a rate visible to our eyes. We ended up spending longer than expected in this park, just watching the water. By the time we left, a sandbar had appeared out by the Five Islands; it had not been visible when we arrived.

Burntcoat Head is similar to the Hopewell Rocks park - at low tide you can walk out onto the ocean floor and look back at the cliffs of land. The rocks here are not sculpted as dramatically as they were at Hopewell Rocks, but it was still an interesting experience to be there at low tide. One company sets up a banquet table on the exposed rocks and holds a "Feast on the Ocean Floor" for guests - then they pack everything up and retreat to shore before the water returns.

Since there are no nearby restaurants, we bought turkey sandwiches at a deli and took them back to the Bed and Breakfast for dinner. Another set of guests walked in and we started chatting. It turned out that I was talking to my old boss from TRW, way back about 30 years ago when I designed modem chips. I had not even recognized him after all this time (he said I looked familiar but couldn't place me). What a funny coincidence.
