othing to Lose is officially the twelfth Jack Reacher novel, but each book in the series is entirely independent of the other books and can be read in any order. I find that the books in the Reacher series are ideal for long journeys - with this title, I read most of it while on a bus ride across Lithuania. Child has a knack of engaging the reader's attention; I find that I always want to read the next chapter as the mystery unravels and the tension rachets upward.

In Nothing to Lose, Reacher is aimlessly taking a bus across America, heading from the east coast toward San Diego for no particular reason. When he walks into the town of Despair, Colorado, he is confronted by a bunch of local toughs that run him out of town. This ruffles Reacher's feathers - if they had simply let him be, Reacher would have quickly moved on. So when the deputies of Despair escort him out of town, naturally Reacher returns. Things escalate. Reacher's curiosity is piqued; what are the citizens of Despair hiding?

Dry and dusty Despair turns out to be a company town. There is one industry that employs most everyone - a gigantic metal recycling plant. All day, trucks drive into Despair with loads of scrap metal. Some of them leave with fresh ingots of recycled metal. It hardly sounds like an industry that needs to be wary of protecting trade secrets.

Further investigation by Reacher reveals more mysteries. There is a top-flight MP army unit guarding the highway that leads west out of Despair. What are they doing there? Every night that the recycling plant operates, a single engine plane takes off at 7 PM and returns at 2 AM. Where is going, and what is it doing? On a late night reconnaissance around Despair, Reacher stumbles over the body of dead man lying near the road. Who is this man, and why hasn't anyone noticed his disappearance?

In the town of Hope, Colorado (located 17 miles from Despair), Reacher makes an ally with pretty young female cop. Vaughan is smart and reliable; she is able to give Reacher support and some answers, but not the answers he wants. Reacher keeps escalating the situation with the Despair townsfolk until finally all secrets are revealed.

I like the Reacher novels because they are engrossing enough that I can tune out the discomfort of a long plane ride. But I admit that if you analyze the Reacher character, it is ridiculous. Reacher has zero possession except a toothbrush. He crisscrosses America aimlessly riding buses to anywhere - imagine how boring it would actually be to lead such an existence - riding Greyhound buses back and forth across the country, without even a paperback book or transistor radio to keep him entertained. Reacher always stumbles into a dangerous situation that allows him to beat up on bad guys. Gunplay is frequently involved. There is typically a smart, attractive female who quickly becomes enamored with him. Reacher never does any training but is always physically fit. Despite many dangerous, violent encounters, Reacher never gets injured to the point where he needs medical attention. I have never read an explanation on why his bank account seems to contain an endless supply of cash (I haven't read the first book in this series, perhaps that explains these magical finances.) When the books end, Reacher strides off into the sunset, usually leaving a considerable amount of carnage and dead bodies in his wake - and yet there is never an investigation by the authorities about his role in all the mayhem in his wake. It is completely unrealistic, but Child's plots and writing style keep the readers turning the pages such that they don't think about how silly the whole premise is. I give the book five stars because it kept me entertained, I turned the pages as quickly as any other reader, always keen to discover what happens next. (I disagreed with a major event at the end, but don't want to include a spoiler).
